Post-Renovation Cleaning Checklist: What to Do Before Moving Back In

Renovation work leaves behind more than just paint fumes. Fine cement dust, sawdust, adhesive residue and construction debris settle into every surface — floors, window tracks, air-conditioning vents, even inside kitchen cabinets. Moving back in before a proper post-renovation clean usually means re-cleaning everything within days, once the dust you can't see starts resettling.

Why post-renovation cleaning is different from regular cleaning

Construction dust is finer and more stubborn than everyday household dust. A quick wipe-down or a single vacuum pass isn't enough — it typically takes multiple passes, the right tools (like microfibre cloths and HEPA-filter vacuums), and attention to spots that don't usually need cleaning at all, such as light fixtures, skirting boards, and the inside of newly installed cabinetry.

A room-by-room checklist

• Ceilings & walls: cobwebs, dust film, and paint splatter on skirting boards
• Floors: a first dry sweep/vacuum to lift loose debris, followed by wet mopping — new tile or timber floors often have a thin haze of grout or finishing residue
• Windows & tracks: dust builds up heavily in window tracks and sliding door rails during construction
• Kitchen: inside and outside of new cabinets, countertops, sink, and any built-in appliances before first use
• Bathrooms: grout lines, fittings, and mirrors, which often carry a fine dust film even behind closed doors
• Air-conditioning & vents: dust settles in and around units and can circulate back into the room if not cleaned before first use

When to schedule the clean

The best time is after all trades have finished (painting, flooring, electrical, plumbing) but before furniture moves in. Cleaning around furniture takes longer and never reaches every surface, so an empty space makes the job faster and more thorough.

DIY vs. professional post-renovation cleaning

A small touch-up job (a repainted room, a new backsplash) is manageable yourself. A full renovation — especially one involving flooring, electrical or plumbing work across multiple rooms — is a different scale of job, often taking a single person a full day or more per room. This is where a two-cleaner team makes the biggest difference: one covering floors and surfaces while the other handles detail work like window tracks and cabinet interiors.

For larger renovations, it's worth asking about a custom session length when you book a package — a two-hour slot may need extending depending on the scope of work.
